Every thursday, i’ll be offering a $5 & BELOW download for you guys. It might be a coloring page, or a kids project – who knows!? i just know i want to be able to get everyone’s creative juices flowing!

Don’t worry! There will still be FREEBIES from time to time, but these thursday downloads will give me a chance to offer crazy-cheap artwork on a more regular basis.

The artwork above is sized at 12′ x 12″ and can be re-sized down to suit your printer’s capabilities and size. I’ll be offering these squares frequently so you’ll be able to create a symmetric grouping that you love for that one bare wall in your house you’ve been dying to liven up!

Sometimes when you’re trying to paint one thing…another emerges. A Happy Accident.

i’d like to give a free 8×10 print of any piece of art in my etsy shop to the first reader who can correctly tell the story behind this art. How do you think it was it made? What materials were used? What tools? Does it convey meaning or represent an emotion?

i know what it says to me when i look at it, and how it makes me feel….but how about you? Double points for colorful (pun intended) answers.

FOLLOW UP EXPLANATION:

ok ladies, so brooke was pretty spot on. But the things i was wiping were little fingers.

i taught an art class to 3,4,5 year olds yesterday and we were learning about Mondrian. They were making black marker grids on white posterboard and painting in spaces using only red, yellow and blue poster paint.
That’s right.
all the color blending on the crumply paper towel was just a lovely happy accident. And yes, Rosie, i DID think the shape looked like butterfly wings. i looked down at the towel and just couldn’t throw it away. So i acted like a crazy lady and tucked it into my bag to bring home.
i scanned it in and duplicated it once (so you see 2 “butterflies”) and that’s it.

Funny how and art project with rigid black lines and bold primary colors could turn into something so soft and precious. The fact that my students little messy fingers created the image (and yesterday was the last class session for the year – sad) make it all the more sweet to me.

step 1: I made a black ink drawing full of swirls and curliques in my favorite twirly way.

step 2: i scanned that, then dragged another piece of my artwork (a fully saturated and detailed marker & pencil illustration) into the photoshop doc on another layer

step 3: i made a mask out of the black line drawing and applied it to the color layer.

step 4: i made layer copies of that cool form and layered them over each other until i liked the design

step 5: i dragged in the background layer….a scan of a painted/stained wood board i made.

…a few tweaks, tugs, and fiddlings with settings & saturations later….voila! i came out with this. It’s a combo of 3 of my favorite design elements that come together in what i think is a Beautiful Mess. And whaddya know? You can make one yours, if you like, by shopping here.
