Love in Wonderland

I got to do a super fun commission recently for a customer who always makes my day with her unique ideas and excitement over the whole creative process. I was asked to make a keepsake piece of artwork for a bride, to be given at her bridal shower. The theme of the party was to be “Wonderland.” The concept was to combine some aspects of fashion illustration (the bride is quite the fashionista and has chosen beautiful attire for her big day) and some components of Wonderland. Here are some images of the basic process as it got underway.

Then here are some closeups that had a bit of gold sparkle. * and if you look closely, you will see some “patriotic” flowers that represent the groom.

Finally, I really got inspired to create wrappings for the gift that would hint at elements of  the art. I found some plain white tissue paper flowers at Target, and spattered them with watercolor to represent the huge watercolor blooms in the art.

Then I wrapped the gift with B&W striped paper to mimic the striped flower stems in the art and coordinate with the B&W ink sketch. I finished with multi-colored floral ribbon and metallic gold ribbon to go along with the shimmery gold paint accents I’d used in the art. I made a matching card using elements from the painting and then decorated the chic black envelope with a glittery gold heart.

i LOVED working on this project and wish everyday could include special commissions just like it. If you would like to work with me on a special keepsake like this, please drop me a line and we’ll see what we can brainstorm together!!

Show Your Colors

Working with Deny Designs, a curated print-on-demand site that creates countless housewares and more using a huge range of art from makers around the world,  these past few years has been a wonderful experience. They are kind people. They continually push their business and brand forward and try new things. They care about their artists. LOVE THEM!

Corfee-DenyColorPaletteADI’ve recently added some new work to my gallery on their site and am super excited about the resulting products. I’ll share some favorites with you over the next few weeks. The artwork above, “Color Palette”, is from a painting i made for my own home. It reminds me of a paintbox, has a totally imperfect, brushstroke-y vibe, and mixes bright colors with more muted, sophisticated tones. It’s the perfect cheaters way to tie a room together while making it feel a bit artsy at the same time. Check it out on table linens, coffee mugs, cell phone cases, duvets, shower curtains and more by clicking here.

And if you want to see all my designs offered across the Deny Designs product line, just click here.

Have a good one. : )

Portraits with whimsy & magic

CorfeeWhimsicalPortraits-TallPinWatercolor, florals, doodles, drips and spatter. i’ve been combining all my favorite painting tidbits into these charming whimsical portraits recently. They make a gorgeous keepsake and look beautiful framed in a nursery or little girl’s room. i scan and keep high resolution digital files of the art, so customers can have the art printed on mugs or in photo books as well. This also allows me to offer additional prints at various sizes so that grandparents, family or friends can have a mini version of the art for their desk as well.

Visit my shop here to purchase one of these darling portraits, and take a look at my other prints and originals while you’re there, too! ; )

Creating with Kids; It’s about much more than the art

Corfee-Books

i make art with kids a lot. it’s fun and silly and inspiring. i kind of love it.

But i also sometimes come across kids who lack confidence in their creativity.
i get that.
Sometimes it’s hard for kids to realize that there is a subject where you “can”t get it wrong!”
But here’s the powerful part…..it takes barely 5-10 minutes of encouragement …sitting right by them and really “seeing” their art, asking them about it, being impressed by their unique choices in color, or creative back-story or whatever….to build them up sky-high. It’s crazy. It’s beautiful. It’s magic.
It’s the one-on-one….the idea that another person doesn’t see their work as right or wrong….but sees the bits of THEMSELVES that they put into it – and are blown away.
This is why i make art books……not to create an idle activity, or to show kids ONE way to do something…..but to help them express themselves and take pride in the fact that THEIR work is not like anyone else’s….and that is AWESOME.
i’d love you guys to buy my books…not just bc it helps feed my kiddos, who are bottomless pits…..but because the books are tools. And some people really can use a little boost and a little prompt to get the creativity flowing. Use any book, or Pinterest post, or DIY video. It’s all good!! But just sit with your kids as they create, or sit with them to hear about what they’ve just created on their own….i swear you will see a change in them…for the better.
You can link to any of my books here. But honestly, it’s not about me. Use any tool you like to work your magic, and ignite that spark of confidence in your kids. -xo

A Simple Reminder to Color

Screen Shot 2016-03-28 at 10.41.04 AM

i recently got a new iPad Pro. i got it to make life easier, staple myself to my desk less often, and work smarter, not harder. In the past, i’d make coloring pages by sketching on paper, then using marker paper and a light box to ink the sketched design, then scan to my computer, open in Photoshsop, clean up the inevitable blobs and bleeds in certain areas caused by marker on paper (even good paper!), then convert to crisp, clean vectors in Illustrator. The process was taking up more time than necessary, and had me at me computer a lot more than i needed to be. After looking into the Cintiq Companion and the iPad Pro, since both allowed for “anywhere” digital drawing, i chose the iPad Pro for it’s other capabilities and cheaper price tag. i still plan to be in-studio for all my hands-on painting work, so i really juts wanted a way to streamline my sketching and vector work, so it was a good choice for me, i THINK!! : )

SO…..now i have been practicing and getting used to the tools and the responsiveness of the apple pencil, and all that jazz…..so you guys will be getting lots of my experiments shared with you as freebie downloads for a little while. Enjoy!! Once i get a good grip on it, i will be adding lots more clip art and digital files to my etsy shop that will be great for your kiddos, for wall art, for party favors and invites, and whatever else you can think of.

Happy Monday! Do Good in the world today!! xo,s

Christmas Illustration Challenge on Instagram

Hey folks! December has been busy with custom orders, etsy shop orders and all things Christmas. But i am so happy i decided to try  the holiday illustration challenge that so many of my artist friends were doing. A lot of them committed to a new holiday themed illustration every day of the month, but i went a bit safer and decided to do 12 Days of “Christmas Belles.” You probably know if you follow me that drawing girlies in fun dresses is my fave. So! Here are all the girlies, plus a pattern (maybe for wrapping paper?) created with all of them side by side. Merry Christmas!!

All of these designs are available for licensing. Please get in touch!

Paint Lab for Kids – My Newest Book!

PAINTLAB-giveaway

December 15 is the official release date for this book that i’ve been waiting for a whole year!

But i have advance copies, signed if you’d like, available in my etsy shop if you want to get yours extra early!

Guys, i am so excited for this book to go out into the world. If you are a parent, teacher, scout leader….anyone who wants to introduce painting and creativity to kids, i think you will find something for you in this book. i’ve tried my best to choose fun subject matter that kids will WANT to paint for each lesson. i’ve kept real life in mind by giving my honest opinion on what supplies you need to start and ways to improvise. i’ve tried to share adaptations for every lesson so that you can ramp it up or simplify it down for all ages. i really poured my heart into it. There are 52 lessons in all, divided into sections titled:

Learning How | Technique Based Labs

Wild Imagination | Idea Based Labs

Palette Play | Color Based Labs

Experimentation Station | Mixed Media Labs

Express Yourself | Inspirational Labs

ALSO!! Every project features a little added bonus. i share a project-related piece from a working artist with the kids. i do this for a few reasons; to add some pretty amazing eye candy to each page and get their wheels turning on how to make each project their own, to show them the many many ways that they can put their creativity into the world FROM FOLKS WHO ARE DOING IT, and to expand their curiosity by having them explore the work of many talented artists from around the globe.

i hope you will enjoy this book. i hope your kids will use it, and gain confidence in their own creative vision. And i really hope it can become a mainstay resource that lives on your bookshelf for many years.

If you would like to share this book on your blog or social media, i would so welcome your support, and would be happy to talk to you if you need me for anything! THANKS! A sneak peek inside is available here.
